The minister of energy and mineral development Ruth Nankabirwa has reassured Ugandans that come 2030 every house should be connected with electricity either solar or hydro.

Addressing the media today at the Uganda media centre in Kampala Nankabirwa a head of the energy week due from November 13th  -18th to sensitize Ugandans about  the usefulness of power, said this is one of the strategies to promote clean energy and electricity must be made available and affordable according to the country’s national agenda 2040

She reaffirmed that with the completion of the pending works at some hydro power dams and replacements of vandalized equipment, Uganda will be able to generate more than 20000 mega watts of power and this will be enough for all households in Uganda.

Minister Nankabirwa has however noted prevailing challenges which include electricity theft, and poor management of power resulting into unfair bills but promised that they are being sorted out including penalty if one is proven guilty of power theft, it attracts a 15 years jail sentence or 20 Millions Uganda shillings for causing a loss in government revenue.

Nankabirwa said in line with the presidential order against the sale of charcoal government is supporting it’s institutions to adjust from the use of firewood to modern stoves that have already been installed at Mwana Mujimu Centre in Mulago Hospital and Luzira Maximum Prison will come next, thus calling upon Schools and institutions to embrace energy saving stoves to preserve trees and the environment.
