The Ministry of Internal Affairs together with the Uganda Police Force in partnership with Kenyan Police has embarked on curbing a number of criminal activities conducted at the Uganda – Kenyan border.

 

Agnes Igoye the Deputy National Coordinator from the Prevention of Human Trafficking Directorate in the Ministry of Internal Affairs says these criminalities were established after thorough investigations in Eastern Uganda areas of Busia, Malaba and Tororo.

 

Addressing the journalists at Police headquarters in Naguru today, Igoye mentions some of the criminal activities carried out in those areas including involving Persons with disabilities into cross border smuggling on tricycles pushed by children as well as recruiting young boys into gold mining.

 

She further says that beautiful girls from the tribe of Batooro, Banyarwanda and Baganda are recruited into bars and prostitution while energetic young boys from the Bakiga tribe are targeted as laborers while reports of domestic violence, sexual exploitation are also on increase in Eastern Uganda.

 

About 20 cases of missing children are reported every month by police in Busia and increasing number of street children mostly from Busoga and Elgon region are registered at Uganda – Kenya border according to Igoye.

 

Meanwhile, Igoye has highlighted the dangers involved in the Bagishu seasonal circumcision saying young boys are given 100shs, loaded on trucks and taken to unknown destination yet in Busia, Tororo and Mbale there is a wave of funeral celebration called Disco Matanga where music address system is hired to play music from 5pm to 9am but this involves illegalities like sexual exploitation, drug abuse and thefts.
