The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has directed the Minister of Education and Sports to present a report to parliament showing the cause of poor performance of children with special needs.

This came during the speaker’s communication noting that the recently released results of Primary Leaving Examinations –PLE, none of the 264 children with special needs who sat for the examinations passed in division one.

He noted that such negligence for children with special needs violates article 35 of the constitution which states that persons with disabilities have a right to respect and human dignity and that the state, society shall take appropriate measures so that they realize their full mental and physical potential.

It’s from this note that Tayebwa asked the ministry of education to present a statement in parliament within two weeks on the way forward to support such children by the government.

Earlier this week, the deaf community in Uganda under the Uganda National Association of the Deaf (UNAD) was alarmed by the continued poor performance of deaf pupils in the Primary Leaving Exams.
