The National Drug Authority (NDA) has disclosed South Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) among the top countries where stolen antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) from Uganda are sold.

This comes after the arrest of six non government workers including Ambrose Mwiru, Vincent Beinomugisha, Lawrence Mandela, Hillary Ainamanyi, Barbara Tushabe and Max Natuhereza after being found in possession and sale of 21 boxes of government medical supplies labeled “Not for sale.”

Abiaz Rwamwiri, the NDA Spokesperson while speaking before health reporters at the Health Journalists Network in Uganda (HEJNU) offices in Kampala today noted these drugs are stolen from the government health facilities and sold in the neighboring countries.

He says that this criminality is performed by a big racket of thieves networked in Mbale, Arua, Kiboga and Ntungamo among other parts who also transform ARVs into animal feeds which are dangerous to human health.

Rwamwiri says that some of those arrested were found in possession of other medical stores like test kits, laboratory equipment and weighing scales.

Government drugs are normally labeled “Not for Sale” by the Ministry of Health which means that they are provided free of charge in all public health facilities.
