The Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has summoned officials from Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), Uganda Police Force, and Ministry of Works for an urgent meeting to discuss the increasing road carnage in the country.

This was during her communication to the house in which she expressed concern about last night’s accident where a link bus rammed into a parked trailer along the Kampala-Fort portal highway killing the driver on spot.

Speaker Among says the country can’t afford to lose more lives of Ugandans due to the failure of some government agencies’ to play their roles.

She, therefore, summoned the responsible agencies, Government Chief Whip, and Leader of the Opposition to attend the meeting on Thursday in her board room at 8am so that they review the relevant road regulations for immediate implementation.

On Wednesday, Speaker Among asked police and UNRA to clear all major highways of abandoned vehicles that pose a threat to road safety.

Last month, the government introduced a new law imposing a fine of Sh2 million on motorists who exceed speed limits. The government believes that this measure will help restore order on the roads and save numerous lives that are lost each year.

Recent Police statistics indicate that at least 12 people die every day in road crashes in the country.
