The Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has refused to react to media reports about corruption allegations in the house.

This was after the Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi and Lwemiyaga West Member of Parliament (MP) Theodore Ssekikubo demanded an explanation from the Speaker on the truth of the matter in the interest to protect the image and reputation of parliament.

For the past week, the media has been awash with reports alleging that the Speaker of Parliament Among received billions of money in intervals using bank accounts of officers in her office.

However, in her response, Speaker Among said she will never run parliament on unjustified media reports and influence from western world because of their selfish interests.

There were also allegations from Tororo district woman MP Sarah Opendi accusing commissioners of parliament for receiving abnormal fuel allowances ranging between Shs8m to Sh12 Million per sitting.

All this happened after Speaker Among tried to block Ssekikubo from raising his point on the alleged corruption scandal in parliament insisting that it would be unfair for parliament to ignore the accusations.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has adjourned parliamentary plenary sittings up to March 28th, 2024 to enable committees to scrutinize ministerial policy statements.

Parliament plenary sittings had resumed on Friday morning after they had been adjourned since 5th March 2024 by the deputy speaker Thomas Tayebwa.

On Friday morning, government ministers tabled over 30 ministerial policy statements and budget estimates for the different public entities as prescribed in the law.

While adjourning the house, she informed the committee that for the next two weeks Sectoral committees will be processing ministerial policy statements and house plenary sittings will resume then.
