Top schools have sharply raised their cut-off points for admission to Senior Five this year.

By raising the points, many students are unlikely to join their first or second choice schools.

The rise is attributed to better performance of learners who sat for the 2023 Uganda Certificate of Education in 2023.

Among the school head teachers radio Sapientia sampled include St. Mary’s Kisubi that has raised the mark to aggregate 10, compared to 12 last year.

Mengo Secondary School cut-off rose from 17 to 16 points, Gayaza high school from 13 to 11 points, Makerere College from 17 to 16 points, Standard High School Zzana from 25 to 23points among other schools.

The Commissioner for Secondary and Basic Education at the Ministry of Education and Sports Ismael Mulindwa, while representing the ministry’s permanent secretary in opening the two day selection exercise on Monday at the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) main hall in Kampala, reminded the schools that this is the last selection exercise on the old curriculum for the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) candidates.

The Selection Committee Chairperson, Dr. Jane Egau Okou reminded the head teachers to ensure placement of 329,939 students who successfully passed UCE and are ready to join A level, Technical and vocational educational training institutions.

She explained that they expect to place 236,280 students into Secondary schools both private and public and the remaining 93,659 candidates will be absorbed in the 87 Government TVET institutions that admit O-level leavers and over 700 private TVET institutions across the country.

She thus appealed to head teachers to be considerate when handling requests for special admissions from former learners and their parents since this is a testimony that they love the school and they should be handled fairly.
