The Parliamentary Forum on Relief and Disaster Preparedness led by the Butaleja Woman Member of Parliament Milly Mugeni together with leaders in Nakawa division have today visited various areas in the division especially those that were affected by increased water levels from Lake Victoria recently.

The aim of the visit was to assess how they can help the residents who are feared to lose their places of settlement said to be within the Environmental reserve.

According to the residents, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) gave them an ultimatum of 21 days to vacate the wetland which they protest saying they are not within the said area just because water levels increased reaching and submerging their places of residence.

The areas visited include Port Bell landing site, Panda Pier, Manyata and Kirombe A.

While touring these areas the Chairperson of the Committee Milly Mugeni assured residents that nobody will vacate their areas but they just need to find out how they were affected and how they can be helped.

The Nakawa Division MP Michael Kabaziguruka together with Nakawa I councillor Moses Okwera Mugisha appealed to the committee members to help their people because many can’t afford to sustain their welfare.

The committee chairperson Mugeni noted that they are to come up with the report and it will be tabled on the floor of Parliament.

The Presidential Affairs Committee of Parliament has visited various districts such as Kasese, Bundibugyo among others ascertaining how water levels have affected the people in these areas.
