The Uganda Prison Services has refuted allegations that the Nakatonya Isolation centre in Moroto district was closed due to the increased new Covid-19 cases.

This follows recent media reports that Nakatonya Isolation centre was closed following the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic with 101 inmates alleged to have been contracted by the dreaded disease.

Frank Baine, the Prisons spokesperson clarifies that Nakatonya is still open and continues to receive suspects from police but they only conducted a massive testing of all inmates after four of them were confirmed to have contracted the virus and upon testing, a total of 34 prisoners were found positive and taken to Jinja treatment center where they are currently admitted.

In a related development, Baine has revealed that currently over 70 people who include inmates and Prison staffs are the only active cases of COVID-19 in Prisons and they are being treated in various treatment centers.
