Pope Francis has called for national reconciliation in the United States, saying that while racism is intolerable, the street violence that has broken out is “self-destructive and self-defeating” and was praying for the repose of the soul of George Floyd.

The US has been gripped by protests over the death of George Floyd an unarmed Black man who died last week May 25, 2020 in police custody in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and police brutality nationwide.

US President Donald Trump has outraged faith leaders and protesters for walking to a historic church near the White House and creating a photo opportunity, just minutes after police used chemical smoke canisters and flash bangs on peaceful protesters to clear the way for the rare walk.

The death of George Floyd 46, has continued to spark huge protests against police brutality across America – with many blacks from over 70 cities demanding for justice.

Protesters want all four officers involved be charged in Floyd’s death. So far, only one – white officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes as he pleaded, “I can’t breathe” – has been arrested and charged on Friday with third-degree murder and manslaughter. Medical examiners have ruled the death a homicide.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has also said that black lives mattered and he supported the right to protest, in a lawful and socially-distanced way, after the killing by police of George Floyd.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu called for clear-headedness amid protests over the killing of George Floyd, adding that while its unacceptable for police to kill any person in such a way, regardless of race or religion,” it’s also not right for protests that have turned into vandalism.

In Houston US, where Floyd is due to be buried, Mayor Sylvester Turner, told the crowds, people should know that he “did not die in vain”.

Former five-weight world champion boxer Floyd Mayweather promised to foot all the funeral costs of George Floyd, his company CEO Leonard Ellerbe, of Mayweather Promotions, confirmed.
