Police move to arrest all money lenders confiscating national identification cards for the clients over loans.
This comes after last week the Masaka Deputy Resident City Commissioner, Ahmed Kateregga instructed police to investigate money lenders who are confiscating the National IDs of borrowers over petty loans.
He issued the directives after receiving complaints from several people after failing to recover their National IDs from the loan sharks.
Fred Enanga, the Police Spokesperson says that crime intelligence picked up information that many money lenders have a tendency of confiscating borrowers’ cards who fail to get social services that require them to present National IDs.
Enanga noted that this act is illegal and not allowed because a national ID cannot be used as a collateral security for loans.
However, Enanga has asked all the people whose national IDs were confiscated by money lenders to report to any nearby police so that they can be helped to get back their IDS.
