The Police for Traffic and Road Safety has directed motorists to move with triangular reflectors that can be placed in front and behind the vehicles once they get broken down along the way.

This comes after last week, the Speaker of Parliament Anita Among instructed Police, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) and Ministry of Works and Transport clear all major highways of abandoned vehicles that pose a threat to road safety

Michael Kananura, the Traffic Police Spokesperson says that by placing triangular rectors on both sides of the vehicle along the road, the drivers should also inform the traffic Police immediately the car breaks down.

He further says that the vehicle owners or driver should contact the private breakdown service to tow it from the road within a few minutes.

Meanwhile; in last week’s traffic report, 100 people are reported to have perished in the 432 accidents that occurred from 9th to 15ty July 2023.

The number of deaths includes the Sunday evening accidents where 15 lives were lost when a trailer registration number UAD 431Q, loaded with fish heading towards Fort Portal, collided with a taxi registration number UBM 426V, heading to Kagadi district from Fort Portal at Kyamutunzi village near River Muzizi in Muhorro town Council, Kagadi district.

The report further shows that among the accidents, 97 were fatal, 202 serious and 133 minor while 424 victims got involved with 324 sustained injuries.

Michael Kananura, the Traffic Police Spokesperson explains that the major causes of the accidents remain; over speeding, over taking and driving under the influence among others and most of them happen at night.
