Police have suspended nationwide mobilization activities by the National Unity Platform (NUP) for failure to follow the guidelines.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) Major General Tumusiime Kasigazi says while the activities were being conducted with permission from police, the organizers breached the issued guidelines.

This the DIGP says has caused public disorder, unnecessary traffic jams, loss of business, malicious damage to property, and a loss of life among others.

In the statement read by Fred Enanga, the Police Spokesperson, Maj Gen Katsigazi noticed that, in all areas where the NUP mobilization activities have been carried out, there have been total breaches to the guidelines, thus causing public disorder, unnecessary traffic jams, loss of business.

He also accuses NUP of malicious damage to property especially in the incident that happened in Mbarara City where the party crowdie supporters vandalized a Toyota Hiace, under registration number UBD 251J and also the traffic fatal accidents in Hoima City where a one, Norman Mugisa died and 10 others got serious injuries, during the NUP convoy.

He again cites the mobilization activity in Kasana-Luweero District where he accuses NUP for inciting violence, promoting sectarianism, making illegitimate calls for the removal of an elected government, and issuance of defamatory statements against the person of the President of the Republic of Uganda.

Enanga however says that police have very robust plans to uphold rule of law, in liaison with other stakeholders and will respond appropriately, against all perpetrators of incitement to violence that can lead to civil unrest throughout the country.
