Kiira Region Police have recovered an AK-47 rifle that is said to have been dropped by suspected robbers at a shop belonging to Victory Kabenge in Church zone cell in Northern Division of Jinja City.
Detectives also recovered a number of bullets left behind by the robbers.
Eyewitnesses say that three armed robbers traveling in a numberless Ipsum vehicle surrounded Kabenge’s retail shop on Tuesday and directed him to hand over all the money he had.
Kabenge shouted for help attracting crowds of passers-by, who physically confronted the robbers using sticks forcing them to dump the gun at the shop and fled for their lives.
Kabenge described the suspects as three tall dark-skinned men.
He says that he bravely held one of the suspected robbers by the neck as he shouted for help before the passers-by courageously roughed them up but they managed to get away.
Godfrey Kalule, the area LC 1 chairperson says that cases of aggravated robbery are increasing on a daily basis, majorly due to youth unemployment and drug abuse.
He calls on Police to liaise with other responsible agencies to rehabilitate the already disgruntled youths from engaging in criminal-related activities.
Kiira Region Police spokesperson, James Mubi says that inquiries are underway and a detailed report concerning the matter shall be availed to the press after interrogating some of the key witnesses.
