Police have fired teargas as they blocked the Leader of Opposition Betty Aol Ochan from accessing the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) offices at Najjanankumbi.

Ochan had gone to the party offices for the planned prayers that had been scheduled ahead of Party President Patrick Oboi Amuriat’s presidential nomination.

Upon her arrival, she was asked to go to Kyambogo where the nomination exercise is taking place and in the process of refusing she was tear gassed by Police.

Later on FDC lawyer Julius Galinsonga was allowed into the party offices and picked all the necessary documents for Amuriat’s nomination. He has vowed to file a case against Abraham Niwagaba, the Officer in Charge of Katwe Police Station for mistreatment of their supporters whom they arrested.

Amuriat who was whisked away in a police car to the nomination venue at Kyambogo condemned the inhuman way in which the security operatives have handled him leaving him without shoes, at a time when the country is talking of observance of the democratic principles.

Military and police officers remain heavily deployed at the FDC offices and no one is allowed to enter or exit following earlier remarks by Amuriat that he would move in a procession to the nomination venue today contrary to the police directives on the matter.

The Inspector General of Police Martin Okoth Ochola on Monday warned that no boda boda riders would be allowed to escort or carry out a procession today or they stand to face the law.

The United States last night issued an advisory to all its citizens to avoid travelling to Kampala and those in Kampala to avoid going near Kyambogo saying there is an elevated potential for civil disturbances in relation to the presidential nominations.
