Police have apologized to the Catholic Church and Buganda Kingdom for firing teargas and disrupting people that were on a cultural event for the Mbogo clan in Mityana district over the weekend.

This comes after the Bishop of Masaka Diocese Rt. Rev. Serverus Jjumba and the Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga condemned the police and military actions saying it was not wise to disperse people who had respected the COVID-19 guidelines.

Heads of Buganda’s Mbogo clan with their subjects had gathered at the clan headquarters in Mugulu, Ssingo County to attend a thanksgiving ceremony that stated with a Homily Mass celebrated by the Bishop Emeritus of Masaka Diocese Rt. Rev. John Baptist Kaggwa for the six year service of Kayiira Gajuule as Kabaka’s Speaker of the Bataka cabinet.

the Police Spokesman Fred Enanga told the press today in Kampala that their actions were not intended to harm Bishop Kaggwa, Cultural leaders and the subjects but the motive was to foil Mityana Municipality and Busujju County legislatures Francis Zaake and David Kalwanga’s rallies respectively, that had to follow after the Mbogo clan event.

However, Enanga calls on the Cultural and Religious leaders to liaise with the security agencies before they organize such events to avoid the outcomes.

It was at the same press conference that Enanga announced a nationwide recruitment of at least 50,000 Special Police Constables (SPCs) to help in manning the 2021 general elections.

The recruitment exercise will be headed by Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) together with the Regional police Commanders (RPCs) and the District Police Commanders (DPCs), applicants must be Ugandan citizens with a good track record and after the training they will be deployed for work and each is expected to earn an allowance of 375,200 shillings.
