Parliament has directed the Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWaT), the Uganda Police Force and the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to tow all cars parked on the road side.

The directive has been issued by the Speaker of Parliament Anita Among on Tuesday during a plenary session in which parliament paid a moment of silence to the fallen businessman Apollo Nyegamahe alias Aponye.

Aponye died on spot after his vehicle hit a parked lorry on Kabale- Mbarara highway on his way to Rukiga district at around 9:30pm.

He was driving to his home village, Kigo in Muhanga Town Council for the burial of a Prisons driver who died on Wednesday last week in another road accident in Mpigi district.

Speaker Among said the relevant authorities should tow all parked vehicles to police stations on owners cost.

She further proposed that the government can also procure a private firm to implement the directive rather than the country losing important investors.

According to the weekly traffic report of between 3rd and 9th July 2023 released on Monday this week by the Police Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, a total of 447 accidents were registered among which 67 were fatal, 235 were serious and 145 were minor.

In these accidents, a total of 441 victims were, among them 77 died including Aponye and 364 sustained injuries among these 38 were traveling on motorcycles both riders and passengers while 26 were pedestrians.
