The Minister for Health Dr Jane Ruth Aceng has admitted that the government has no capacity to stop medical workers from leaving for greener pastures due to the limited resources for more recruitment.

This was while responding to the question from a journalist during a press conference at the Ministry’s headquarters about the increasing number of doctors and nurses flying to foreign countries for greener pastures.

According to the latest statistics from the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council, more than 2,000, nearly 50 per cent of the registered number of medical practitioners, have left the country in the past 10 years with South Sudan being the most destination county.

Dr Aceng says that the government can currently afford replacement since the resources for recruitment isn’t yet favorable.

She says that though the lucrative package is the most highlighted factor, trained medical practitioners also move to other countries on different matters.
