A section of opposition Members of Parliament have protested the tax levied on diapers by the Government calling it insensitive.

The lawmakers say this will worsen the lives of mothers still in the productive age and also the adults with non-communicable diseases who use the diapers.

Last week Parliament approved the tax on diapers with the aim of collecting 2.6 billion shillings in the Value Added Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2023 which proposed exemption on payment of tax on adult diapers which some MPs fought vigorously.

Addressing journalists at Parliament, the Shadow Minister for Information and Anti-Corruption, Joyce Bagala who is also the Mityana District Woman MP noted that many Ugandans are suffering from non-communicable diseases and they need diapers for health reasons.

The Kiboga District Woman MP Christine Kaaya Nakimwero who is also the Shadow Minister for Environment noted that for the Government to impose a tax on diapers on grounds of environmental protection is not justifiable but they need to bring a policy on waste diaper management.
