A section of the opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) has demanded for a forensic audit of the gun-fingerprinting and CCTV.

The Shadow Minister for Internal Affairs who is also the Mukono North MP Abdallah Kiwanuka says it’s disappointing for the country to continue experiencing gun violence and several attacks on Ugandans yet the government embarked on gun registration some time back to address the challenge of having the deadly weapon in the wrong hands.

Kiwanuka also noted with concern over the recent atrocities experienced in the country that have been masterminded by security officers citing the case where a police officer SP Vincent Irama hired his gun in the murder of a city lawyer Ronnie Mukisa.

Now opposition is requesting the IGG to investigate and give a detailed report on the registration of guns in the country and the cost of CCTV installed along the roads to curb criminality.

In May this year, reports from the media indicated that about 113,660 guns were discovered to be unregistered in Uganda, four years after President Museveni announced a 10-point security plan, which included finger-printing guns, to combat a spate of rising urban crime.

The 2022 annual crime report released by the Uganda Police showed that 38 guns with 705 live rounds of ammunition were stolen or robbed from security personnel, and of these, 30 guns and 545 rounds of ammunition were recovered.
