The National Unity Platform Women League has called for eviction of land uses in Katonga and Lweera Wetlands along Kampala-Masaka highway in efforts of protecting the environment.

Christine Kaaya, the Kiboga District Woman Member of Parliament while addressing the press conference at NUP headquarters in Kamwokya this morning noted that the sand mining and rice plantation in Lweera were the main contributors of fast-moving flood water in Katonga River that left the bridge broken.

The fast-moving flood water washed away part of River Katonga Bridge along Kampala-Masaka road last Thursday which affected the already worse transport system after about 200meters’ section between Kayabwe Town and Katonga Village was left covered by flash floods.

Kaaya says poor women who were conducting vending businesses along Kampala-Masaka highway were the most affected together with their families and it is time for the government to utilize this situation to evict all land uses in Lweera wetland to protect the environment and avoid similar incidents from happening again.

She says that they are to provide necessary support to the National Environmental Management Authority -NEMA to ensure that land users at Lweera wetlands are evicted.

Meanwhile, the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Council Speaker Zahra Luyirika has called on the government to ensure that diapers and pumpers are not taxed in the next financial year’s budget.
