The opposition National Unity platform (NUP) has condemned the National Electoral Commission -EC for suspending the women council elections.

According to a statement released by the Electoral Commission Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama last week the compilation of the Village Women Residents’ Register has been finalized and the registers are currently on display across the country.

However, the Ministry of Finance informed EC that it did not have the Shs20bn to sum up a total of UGX 35.6b that is required to organize the elections yet currently, only Shs15.6bn had been provided, which is not enough.

Joel Ssenyonyi, the Party Spokesperson while addressing journalists on Monday at NUP headquarters in Kamwokya said that this was uncalled for since women elections are not considered as an emergency and it’s the mandate of EC to look for funds before announcing the set off of its activities.

Ssenyonyi adds that the suspension has affected them financially because they had printed posters, T-shirts and done all ground mobilization using the little funds available so all this was put to waste yet EC will not refund it.

He alleged that the EC could have colluded with some political parties and decided to suspend the election because they knew that NUP was going to win all the posts, but this will not scare them instead they are going to continue mobilizing until when EC announces the dates for the elections.

However, Ssenyonyi calls upon party members, especially women, to stay strong and committed to their cause.
