The Catholics and well-wishers have converged at Lubaga Cathedra to commemorate 139 years since Fr Laudel Simion Mapeera and Bro. Amans met the late Kabaka of Buganda Muteesa 1 at his palace in Lubaga on February 23rd 1879 shortly after their arrival in Uganda which palace was later given to the Catholic Church.

The Pope Nuncio, Archbishop Michael August Blume hailed the White Fathers and the Catholic Church in Uganda for commemorating such a day because it marks the beginning of faith in Uganda and its virtues; Peace and love, justice and social wellbeing of the people.

Archbishop Blume hailed Buganda Kingdom for its generosity and all the support it continues to accord the Catholic Church.

He said amidst all challenges the Catholic Church must proclaim the gospel to all. He says a living gospel is important that is helping those in need and reaching to the afflicted.

Representing the Buganda Kingdom, the Katikiro Charles Peter Mayiga hailed the friendly working relationship between the two intuitions.

He said although there are assertions that it is Buganda Kingdom which oppressed Catholic Missionaries leading to the killing of believers now Uganda martyrs it was due to foreign influence.

Mayiga praised the Archbishop of Kampala Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga for his boldness when it comes to issues affecting people, Buganda Kingdom and the country at large.
