The Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board (UBTEB) has registered a 19% performance improvement in the November/December 2023 examinations compared to those that were sat in November/December 2022.

This has been disclosed by the UBTEB Executive Secretary, Onesmus Oyesigye during the release of November/December 2023 exam results revealing that out of the 4,344 candidates who sat for exams, 4,059 successfully acquired all the competencies in their respective trades.

Out of the 832 female candidates who sat, 89.5% acquired all the competencies while out of the 3,512 male candidates who sat, 94.4% acquired all the competencies.

Oyesigye disclosed that despite the low enrollment of females in the Technical vocational Education Training (TVET) programmes, the few who enrolled performed well and acquired all the competencies.

He however revealed that there was a decline with candidates scoring distinctions reducing from 9.3% in 2022 to 3% in 2023; those who scored a credit reduced from 52.6% to 47% and pass grades went up from 11.9% to 43%, although the overall pass rate was higher at 93%.

Oyesigye says that this is partly explained by the fact that training and assessment is now emphasizing more practical hands-on and skills based assessment.

He therefore, called upon parents and the general public to encourage their children to enroll for TVET programmes.
