Government has introduced an environmental penalty express scheme to protect the environment.

 

The Executive Director for the Uganda National environmental Authority Dr.Barirega Akakwasa while addressing the media at the Uganda Media centre says the law stipulates that driving a car without a dust bin will attracts a penalty of 6million shillings or imprisonment, throwing rubbish through a car window will also attract  a penalty of 6 million  shillings among other ..

 

The law also compels people who destroy Wetlands to pay 3million shillings or more depending on the magnitude of damage.

 

He says the law will become operational effective 1st April 2023 and noise polluters will be liable to up to 10 million shillings in fine.

 

The law also go ahead to compel those engaging in sale of polythene bags below 30 micrones will be liable to pay 100million shillings or imprisonment.

 

 

He says government has fronted this law to ensure that the environment is protected as the country continues to face the challenges of climate change.
