Government has set up 50,000 shillings for enrollment and express renewal of the National Identity Cards for Ugandans.

Another amount of 200,000 shillings has also been set up for the replacement and change in particulars on the national IDs.

This was disclosed by the team of officials from both the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the National Identity and Registration Authority –NIRA led by the Internal Affairs Minister Gen Kahinda Otafiire who had appeared before the members of the Parliamentary Defense Committee on Thursday.

According to them, this payment will effectively start in the coming mass renewal enrollment of all soon expiring National IDs.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Gen Joseph Musanyufu said that with the new charges, the government will generate revenue of over 160 billion shillings with the project cost of at least 666bnshs.

However, Minister Otafiire clarified that in the forthcoming national ID renewal exercise, all cards will be free of charge apart from those who need express IDs.

The renewal process will start in June 2023 and end in August 2024 with approval by local police though opposed by committee members.
