The Leader of Opposition in Parliament Mathias Mpuuga has called for a review of the Parliamentary Pensions Act 2022 to determine the categories of beneficiaries of the retirement emoluments.

This follows the ongoing controversial debate from the public on the recent give away of brand new Toyota Land Cruisers estimated at Sh600 million each to former speakers and deputy speakers amidst the challenging economic crisis.

Mpuuga says there’s a need for a wider conclusive debate to revise the act and seek the government attorney general’s opinion on who particularly should access certain benefits in the act.

Apparently, the Parliamentary Pension Act grants benefits to all former speakers and deputy speakers of parliament irrespective of still serving and having access to public resources which Mpuuga opposes.

Mpuuga argues that those still serving and earning from public offices shouldn’t access such benefits as opposed to those who entirely retired from public offices.
