Members of Parliament on the ICT committee have requested government to extend SIM Card registration deadline ending 31st this month when those who will not have registered will be switched off.

This was reached following uncoordinated explanations by government departments like NIRA, Ministry of ICT, and that of Security when asked to give updates on how many Ugandans were registered and those at risk of being switched off.

Yesterday telecom companies that appeared before the same committee expressed fears of losing huge sums of money like MTN is likely to lose close to 100 billion shilling including taxes to government, Airtel has registered up to 73%, UTL and K2 face the same challenges.

They called for extension of the deadline for registration to undisclosed date following information from the Minister for Security General. Henry Tumukunde that he was not aware of any development as far as SIM Card registration is concerned.

However in the meeting the MP from Buyaga West Barnrbas Tinkasimire and Kawempe South Mubaraka Munyagwa blamed the days to government institutions like NIRA which are using poor technology for such an uphill task.

In May this year, President Yoweri Museveni ordered for the extension of Sim card registration for three months after discovered that many phone users had not picked their national identity cards which is the major requirement for the exercise.
