Nakaseke South Member of Parliament, Paul Luttamaguzi has suggested the enactment of a law that will restrict top government officials from seeking health services abroad.
Lutamaguzi was replying to the concerns about prominent people in government repeatedly dying from abroad on huge sums of taxpayers’ money needed to meet their treatment expenses.
This comes when the country is mourning yet another high profile person Gen Elly Tumwine who died of lung cancer from Nairobi last week, the late Jacob Oulanyah former speaker of parliament died from Seattle in America due to organ failure in May and Governor Bank of Uganda Tumusiime Mutebire who died from Nairobi from Nairobi.
Lutamaguzi says this should be a wakeup call to the government to invest in the country’s health system more than ever budgeting for flying VIPs abroad to seek for better health services.
A leaked report from the December 2011 ministerial retreat which was convened to assess the government’s performance in that year revealed that every year the government spends at least $150 million (about Shs377 billion) on treatment of mostly top government officials abroad.
