The Shadow Minister for Agriculture who is also the Kimaanya-Kabonero Constituency Member of Parliament Abed Bwanika has threatened to move a minority report against the government financial year budget of 2022/23.

Speaking to journalists at parliament, Bwanika says it’s sad to learn that the government has continuously cut and allocated less money to the Agricultural sector which is the backbone of the country’s economy and biggest employer of Ugandans.

Bwanika says that in the next financial year, the government has allocated less than 3% of the national budget to the agricultural sector contrary to the Maputo declaration where Uganda is a signatory.

According to the declaration, member countries agreed to allocate 10% of their national budget to agricultural boosting and promoting activities.

He further noted that the government instead has diverted some of the money meant for agriculture inputs to Parish Model Program and other activities.

Bwanika cited the 19.5 billion shillings that was meant for buying coffee seeds now diverted to unbudgeted activities thus promising not to support the coming budget if the government doesn’t reverse some of the budget cuts.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture has assured delivery of cypermethrin insecticide to deal with the army worms that have devastated crops like maize and coffee in areas of Bukomansimbi and Bugweri among others.
