The Uganda Prisons Services has in past two weeks registered 100 new cases of Covid-19 which is an increased number of COVID19 patients in the prisons and one new death.

According to Frank Baine, the Prisons Spokesman, in total the Prisons Service has over 200 Covid19 patients which include the inmates, prisons staff and their relatives.

Baine says that the registered death was a wife to the prison staff at Luzira who passed away at Mulago National referral Hospital while the other patients are currently receiving treatment in various Prisons treatment centers of Gulu, Jinja and Mbarara

Baine has however clarified that it’s not in the mandate of the Prisons authorities to fly any inmate that want specialized treatment a broad as it has been alleged by politicians in Kampala.

Meanwhile, Baine warned those who have repeatedly defied the Covid-19 directives to know that they still have space in their various Prisons centers where they can be kept.
