Ministry of Health is concerned with the rising number of mental illnesses yet there are few mental health workers in the country.

According to the Ministry, Butabika hospital alone admits between 9000-10,000 mental patients annually meaning 850 patients are admitted per day.

The Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Dr. Diana Atwine says drugs and alcohol consumption are the main cause of mental illnesses among Ugandans.

This was during a breakfast meeting engagement with the media in Kampala.

The Executive Director, Butabika Mental National Referral Hospital, Dr. David Basangwa, says there is still big gap of mental health workers with Uganda currently having only 30 psychologists of whom 7 are in the Butabika facility.
