Intern doctors under their umbrella body, the Federation for Uganda Medical Interns (FUMI) have threatened to conduct an industrial action starting February 1st, 2024 after Government failed to fulfill its pledge to them.

While addressing journalists at the Mulago Guest House, the FUMI President Bill Adrati revealed that on August 9th, 2021 President Yoweri Museveni directed that all medical interns should be paid Shs2.7 million which is a half of Shs5.4 million paid to senior doctors monthly.

Adrati says currently the intern doctors are earning Shs1 million instead Shs2.7 million as per the directive hence their decision to lay down tools until when the Presidential directive is fulfilled.

Two years ago, the country’s fountain of honour in a letter addressed to the Prime Minister and the Ministries of Health, Finance and Public Service, instructed that medical interns be paid a monthly allowance of shs 2.5 million.

Medical interns had in recent times called for industrial action accusing the Government of not addressing their demands of increasing their monthly allowance from shillings 750,000 to shillings 5 million that junior medical officers earn.

The interns also wanted the government to provide housing for them.
