The Kampala Central Police Station (CPS) has arrested and detained 27 intern and senior doctors over holding an unlawful procession.

Early this Wednesday medical interns under their umbrella body Federation for Uganda Medical Interns (FUMI) together with senior doctors decided to walk to Parliament to deliver their petition to speaker of parliament over ministry of health failure to fulfill president’s directive to increase their salaries but instead they are being fired from work.

Luke Oweyesigyire, the Deputy Police Spokesperson Kampala Metropolitan while addressing journalists at CPS Kampala said that due to presence of Covid-19 guidelines people are not supposed to move in large numbers to avoid the spread of the pandemic.

However, the doctors have condemned police for denying them a chance to fight for their rights.

Meanwhile, Dr. Samwel Oledo, the President of Uganda Medical Association (UMA) said that they have decided to join the intern doctors to petition speaker of parliament because they know he can easily order parliament to intervene in doctors matters.

Later at around 6pm, the Medical Interns and Senior doctors were released on police bond and ordered to report at CPS in the days indicated in their bond as investigations continue.
