The President of Uganda Medical Association (UMA) Dr. Ekwaro Obuku has called upon Ugandans to embrace the government proposal of a National Health Insurance Scheme.

While addressing journalists at Fairway Hotel in Kampala, Obuku said that the scheme will empower the contributing citizens to access quality healthcare hence improving the life health indices in Ugandans.

Obuku notes that Uganda is the only East African country without a National Health Insurance Scheme therefore it’s important that Ugandans harmonizes the system so that no one is left out.

He further adds that the National Health Insurance Scheme is not a political move as its need was noted as early as 1987 by the Prof. Owori Report.

Cabinet on Monday approved the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) 2019 that will require all Ugandans above 18 years to contribute to the scheme before accessing health services across the country.
