Police at Old Kampala has in custody holding one Sulaiman Mkanda for allegedly attempting to steal a motorcycle and impersonating as the Deputy Assistant Inspector of Police –D/AIP.

According to the police, the suspect was arrested at about midnight at Namungoona Zone on April 19th, 2022 when Mkanda moving on a motorcycle being ridden by another man only identified as Aine stopped an oncoming motorcycle registration number UFL 990Q, pulled out a fake police warrant card reading D/AIP Byaruhanga Sulaiman to prove to the rider that he was an officer.

Luke Owoyesigyigire, the Deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan explains that when Mkanda begun to questioning the victim identified as Abdul Bukenya as to why he was ridding very fast, the rider started to shaken and allowed the suspect to remove his ignition key.

Owoyesigyire says that during the process, police patrollers led by OC Namungoona arrived and Mkanda threw away the warrant card plus the ignition key and took off but the officers pursued and arrested him after a serious struggle.

Later, Mkanda was taken to Old Kampala Police station where he is currently being held and relevant statements have been recorded from him waiting to be arraigned before court over charges of impersonation as a police officer and theft of a motorcycle on the suspect.

Meanwhile, police is also looking into other many allegations where victims have reported allegations that officers not in uniform have previously disappeared with their Motorcycles upon impounding them.
