Lecturers and students of Makerere University have started collecting relief items in support of landslide affected communities in Bududa, Eastern Uganda.

 

The week-long campaign is aimed at mobilizing the university community to stand with survivors of a landslide which killed more than 40 people last week.

The tragedy occurred when River Suume, in Bududa district, burst its banks following a four-hour downpour and a landslide up the mountain that rolled big boulders through villages in Bukalasi Sub County on Thursday.

The landslide affected 139 households with a population of 695 people from the villages of Lwanda, Malandu, Namalira, Nyekhe, and Shitikho, Suume, Nnayinza, Shishambwa, Nanyenga and Bunamwamba. Also affected were the trading centres of Naposhi, Nalutumu and Wanjenuwa.

 

According to Dr Deus Kamunyu, the Chairperson of Makerere University Academic Staff Association-MUASA they want to assist the survivors.

 

Climate Change and Vulnerability Scientist Dr Michael Mbogga advises that communities around the slopes of Mt Elgon to heed to the advise to avoid loss of life.
