The Justice Catherine Bamugemereire’s Land Commission has spent the past four months without funding.
The Commission Chairperson, Justice Catherine Bamugemereire told journalists at the National Archives and Records Centre on Monday that their activities were not budgeted for despite the fact that they continue receiving complaints from the public.
She explained that the Commission would wish reach all parts of the country but they are constrained financially.
The Commission Lead Counsel, Ebert Byenkya, said the Commission has a huge wage bill which includes the emolument of Commissioners and investigators among others which greatly hampers their operations..
The financial woes of the Commission came to the fore when Bamugemereire was responding to media reports claiming that the Commission had Okayed evictions in Lusanja village in Kasangati Town Council in Wakiso District.
On Friday 12th October, city businessman, Medard Kiconco evicted 150 households from their homes in Lusanja village. Some evictees claimed that the Commission was aware of the land dispute but had permitted their eviction in favor of the businessman.
Bamugemereire denied authorizing the eviction, saying they advised against it. She also noted that the Commission has little say, when a matter has been concluded in courts of law, saying it can’t interfere with proceedings of other institutions of justice.
She condemned evictions saying it was unfortunate that evictions are being conducted at night, on weekends and in the wee hours of morning.
