Makerere University- MaK Vice chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe has been accused by the concerned students of the university for turning the institution into a political jungle to achieve his personal interests.

Petitioning the Leader of Opposition Matthias Mpuuga at parliament, the leader of the student’s delegation Joshua Muhwezi said that Prof. Nawangwe used the university council to ban guild elections following the campaigns that left the Uganda Christian University –UCU law student Bewatte Betungura dead.

He says Nawangwe is in fear that the student leadership once elected will resist the plot of extending his term in office having clocked and surpassed the age of 65 years for a V.C to be in office as per the Universities Human Resource Manual and regulations.

According to the Universities Human Resource Manual and regulations, a vice chancellor must not exceed 65 years of age.

However, in reply after receiving the petition, the Leader of Opposition Mpuuga warned Prof Nawangwe to desist from acts aimed at tarnishing the image of Makerere University, abuse of human rights and also turning MaK into a big primary school.

Mpuuga has promised to forward the matters to the shadow Minister for Youth and Education so that it can be tabled in parliament for more actions.
