The increasing hurdles faced by mothers during referrals after delivering premature babies have prompted the administrators of Luwero hospital in Luwero District to establish a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Records from Luweero hospital show that every month, between 350 and 370 women give birth from the facility.

However, at least 55 of the children are always in need of neonatal care services and the only solution was to refer them to other health facilities like Kiwoko hospital in Nakaseke District for better management, which distance is always complicated to any expectant mother due to the bad state of the road.

To save the situation, Luweero hospital has taken action to have a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

According to Dr. Steven Magera, the Medical Superintendent of Luweero hospital, the unit has been constructed with support from Adara Group, a non-government Organization.
