At least 14 residents from Bwaba and Walugombe villages in Kikyuusa Sub-County, Luweero district have petitioned the area Resident District Commissioner -RDC Richard Bwabye seeking his intervention following eviction threats by a Supreme Court Deputy Registrar, Mary Babirye.

The petitioners are occupying part of the 65 acres Babirye bought from Paul Kiraaza.

One of them, John Kaluzaalira, acquired 3.3 acres of the land in 1971.

But it’s reported that Babirye bought the land in 2004.

She in 2020 introduced herself as their new landlord.

She made an announcement using a community megaphone in December last year ordering them to harvest their crops and vacate the land before January 5, 2023.

Zakaliya Lule, the LC 1 Chairman of Bwaba village reveals that he has written to Babirye twice asking her to meet the affected tenants in vain.

It’s against this background that they have decided to seek the RDC’s intervention.

Speaking to reporters in Luweero, RDC Bwabye has acknowledged receipt of the petition saying his office is moving to look into it.

Babirye the accused says by the time she bought the land in 2004, there were few occupants and the complainants are treated as encroachers.

She says she tasked them to present documents of ownership but they failed.
