The Ministry of Defense and Veteran Affairs needs Sh91bn to pay off 11,000 veterans across the country.

 

This is after the ministry conducted a verification exercise last year where it cleared 25000 veterans to benefit in this programme.

Since then, out of these, about 14,000 veterans have been paid off as of December 2022 leaving 11000 pending.

 

Speaking to the press at Mbuya ahead of the NRM Liberation day celebration on January 26th, 2023, the State Minister for Defense and Veteran Affairs Huda Abason Oleru noted that they spend 5.2billion shillings per month for veterans’ pensions.

 

She also highlighted some of the achievements in the 37years that among others include amendment of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces –UPDF Act 2022 where they included the recognition of military veterans, reducing pension case backlog and Formulation of 69 SACCOs for veterans to benefit from the government programs.
