As the country celebrates the 31st National Heroes’ day, a section of the local leaders in Luweero the epicenter of the NRA 1981-86 bush Guerrilla war that ushered in the current NRM regime in power, are disappointed over the lost meaning in the Heroes day.

In 2001, Parliament passed an Act recognizing June 9 as a designated Heroes’ Day but it had been celebrated before in remembrance of the 9 supporters of the 1981/86 guerrilla bush war who were killed by machetes under the orders of Bazirio Olala Okero. The 9 were members of the; Lutamaguzi family who lived at Kikandwa in Luweero Nakaseke district.

This was done in remembrance to those who lost their lives during Guerrilla war but at the same time to acknowledge the distinguished service to those who contributed to the liberation war.

A number of Luweero leaders who have talked to Radio Sapientia have mixed reactions.

Former Luweero Town Council LC3 Chairperson Betty Kyeyune says the formulation of the list of those to be recognized for their contribution has for years been marred with corruption & lack of transparency.

George William Namugera the chairman Kasana-Kakookolo village in Luweero Town Council wants the day to be stretched starting with those who contributed towards the1900 Buganda Agreement as well as the Uganda’s independence because this country did not start with 1986 bush war.

Emmy Ssemugabi the Luweero Sub County LC3 chairman who is an Ex-combatant says they contributed enormously to the bush war but todate there a lot of unfulfilled promises.

For his part, the Luweero Opposition Democratic Party [DP] Chairman Erasto Kibirango says that the peasants have not benefited from this day:
