Police have confirmed to have safely accompanied the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP)  leader Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine to his home at Magere in Wakiso district from Entebbe International Airport on Thursday.

Kyagulanyi was this morning arrested upon returning to the country from a trip abroad.

Eyewitnesses at the airport reported a heavy military presence as Bobi Wine arrived from an international trip.

Soldiers surrounded him and swiftly apprehended him, before driving him away in an undisclosed location which was later revealed by police as his home.

Bobi Wine’s supporters had planned to accompany him en masse to his home north of the capital, Kampala; to welcome him back, but police had said such gatherings were illegal.

Last month, Ugandan police announced they were banning rallies being organized by the NUP across the country because of public order issues.

Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson says that Kyagulanyi is safe at his home in Magere after being accompanied by the security agencies.

He however appreciates the security agencies for their efforts in maintaining the safety and security of this country.
