The Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has today launched the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Electric Motorcycle Charging Station, the first of its kind in Kampala.

This was at a function held at KCCA Rubaga Division offices, aimed at reducing air pollution in the city.

In partnership with Zembo (U) Ltd, and funding from the European Union under the Program on Integrated Local Finances for Sustainable Urban Development (PIFUD), KCCA constructed the Pilot Electric Motorcycle Charging Station   with 25 more set to open.

This is part of the Climate Change strategic actions aimed at contributing to the global agenda on sustainable Cities and Communities affordable and clean energy, as well as industry innovation and infrastructure.

The Lord Mayor stated that the City’s air pollution level is worryingly high at 50.6ug/m3 particulate matter concentration, which exceeds the WHO recommended level of 15 ug/m3, adding that every effort should be undertaken to address the situation including use of new technologies.

He welcomed the initiative and observed that for the Project being piloted to succeed, the cost of electricity needs to come down and alternative sources including production from Garbage that KCCA is currently exploring, need to be supported by the government.

The function was attended by the Representatives of EU, PILFUD, Mayor of Rubaga, Councilors and KCCA Technical staff amongst others.
