The state has slapped charges of terrorism against eleven National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters who were recently arrested in Kawempe and Nabweru over charges of unlawful manufacture of firearms.

The group was on 19th May 2023 charged before the Nabweru magistrates’ court with charges of unlawful manufacture of ammunition and were subsequently sent on remand until today.

However, on their appearance today for their bail application, prosecution through senior state attorney Sarah Nambuya tendered an amended charge sheet that saw terrorism charges preferred against the accused persons.

Court presided over by grade one magistrate Christian Kibuuka informed the accused persons that the court has no jurisdiction to entertain both their plea and application for bail.

They have been further remanded to Luzira prisons until 20th June and the state has been asked to expedite the case so that accused persons stand trial in the high court international crimes division.

Shamin Malende and Luyimbaazi Nalukoola the lawyers representing the group noted that they are to file an application for bail application of their clients in the high court on account of presumption of innocence.

Prosecution alleges that Umar Magala, Abdul Katumba, Hamidu SSekidde and others on the 7th May 2023 at Nabweru NORTH ZONE, for the purposes of influencing the government or intimidating the public for a political, religious, economic or social aims, carried out acts of terrorism to wit purchase of materials, manufacture and possession of improvised explosive devices.
