The Archbishop of Kampala Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga has appealed to security and government agencies directly mandated with the supervision of the elections to observe the constitution during this exercise.

Uganda is already in the electoral process with the last nominations destined to take place next week of the presidential candidates.

However the last party elections and the process to the nominations by the electoral commission has been characterized by violent scenes by either the party members themselves or the security agencies acting contrary to the law which has left many with injuries.

The latest incident involves the Wamala Regional Police Commander Bob Kagarura and the Mityana DPC Alex Mwine who surrounded The Mbogo clan chiefs who were attending a thanksgiving ceremony for their leader, Gajuule Kayiira Kasibante on Saturday Oct. 17th 2020 and used teargas to disperse them including the Eucharistic celebration that was led by Bishop Emeritus of Masaka Rt. Rev. John Baptist Kaggwa. This has since cause confusion and police had to apologies. The Catholic Church says they accept the apologies but it should be the last time.

Dr. Lwanga says as a leader he cannot look on as the situation that led to the over throwing of the past governments slowly resurfaces today.

He said this during the 54th Archdiocesan day celebrations at Lubaga Cathedral where he also decried the increasing scrupulousness amongst some officers in government offices who are forging documents including land titles to the extent of forging his signature and other archdiocesan officials to grab church land.

On the account of the diocesan activities and achievements, Dr. Lwanga said the Church has been able to do all its activities in all the 69 parishes under the three offices; teaching, sanctifying and governance but the outbreak of Coronavirus equally affected them. They have reached out to the needy through Caritas and the Good Samaritan group to distribute food and other essential needs.

He also enumerated a number of evil acts like murders, domestic violence, child sacrifice, violent Political activities, and use of media to tarnish the image of others, deceit, stealing among others as areas that must be stopped.

He later launched the new Kampala Archdiocesan theme for this year; Fratelli Tutti: Let us deepen our faith, hope and love (1 Cor. 13:13) by being Good witnesses to Christ (Acts 1:8)

At the same function the Katikiro of Buganda Kingdom Charles Peter Mayiga who was represented by Ow’ekitibwa Prosperous Nankindu praised the Catholic Church the supportive services in developing areas and the people adding that despite the existence of Covid-19 people should remain firm and devise new means to overcome the pandemic and its effects.

The Vice president Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi who represented the central government said Uganda and the entire world has been challenged by Covid-19 but government and the church have worked together to console the people but they must not get complacent because the pandemic is still with here.

On the issue of elections Ssekandi said Ugandans should cherish their constitution and live to their motto; For God and My Country; if Uganda is to remain together.
