The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has granted the Committee of Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) more time to complete the Bank of Uganda probe into the closure of defunct banks.

The committee which has served for two and half years, its tenure was meant to expire on January 16th next year but according to the speaker, this will stretch up to  February 20th 2019 to allow them conclude their current work.

In August this year, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) President Patrick Amuriat fired COSASE Chairman Abdul Katuntu together with the committee Vice Chairperson, Anita Among and replaced them with the Kawempe South and Rubaga North MPs, Mubarak Munyagwa and Moses Kasibante respectively.

However, the new appointees hadn’t taken over office as the tenure of the current team has been ongoing.

The Speaker explains that by changing the committee’s leadership now, it might jeopardize the effective conclusion of the probe hence Katuntu’s committee has up to February next year to submit their report on the closure of the seven defunct banks.
