Journalists did not do enough to question official narration in their reporting about the Covid-19 pandemic in Uganda, a report has disclosed.

The report Released during a virtual media symposium on Covid-19 pandemic this morning by the African Center for Media Excellence (ACME) with support from the British High Commission, indicates, over 19,000 articles reported by local print media between the month of January and July 2020, but articles on the same subject dropped in the month of June and July compared to those published between March and May.

Peter Mwesigye, the ACME Executive Director says that the President, Minster for health and other government officials were given free pass to frame the stories.

He adds that stories related to impact of COVID-19 on people’s economy remained the biggest focus between April and July while those on human resource were frequently used for publications.

However, Mwesigye urges media houses and newsrooms to ensure science journalists are facilitated for research and in depth reporting.
