Interpol Uganda has arrested 34 people in its annual five days’ operations against transnational crimes.

Assistant Inspector General of Police –AIGP Moses Balimwoyo, also Interpol director, says that five days’ operation conducted from October 30 to November show 34 people netted over smuggling gold, narcotics, wildlife products and human trafficking.

One person was arrested at Entebbe International Airport with 134 grams of smuggled gold valued 17 million shillings, six suspected narcotics illegal dealers were arrested in Kisenyi, two were netted trafficking narcotic drugs in Busia in addition to impounding 50 small wrapped papers of narcotics in Mbale town.

 “Three were arrested for cultivating narcotic drugs, 33 gardens of cannabis measuring approximately 30 acres were destroyed in Busia. 10 suspects who were arrested for possessing cannabis have since been charged, remand to prison, one person was arrested with Monitor Lizard meat and skin, two other people were arrested for environmental crimes among others illegal extraction of sand and cutting trees.

Balimwoyo said four motor vehicles found loading illegally mined sand were abandoned by owners and were impounded while 30 victims were intercepted being trafficked and 10 suspects arrested.

In addition, there are posh cars being verified by Interpol allegedly to have been stolen from countries such as UK, Zambia and Zimbabwe that are under investigations.
